Stewardship Hike Carthew Bay

On May 29, 2017,
Dorthea Hangaard of the Couchiching Conservancy joined 10 members
of the Orillia Naturalists’ club for her introduction to the Carthew Bay property.
The property team from the club is the eyes and ears for the Conservancy and the team

is responsible for keeping track of any improper incursions onto
the property as well as its natural well-being.

We took advantage of a mid-spring visit and heard and saw many birds
that have arrived on breeding territory.

The pleasing call of the wood thrush on the south portion of the property
kept us entertained as we walked the figure-8 trail

that was created last fall.
Of course the mosquitoes were in abundance and everyone donated a bit of blood.
Access to the north side of the property is from the Orillia- Barrie rail trail
which gave great bird-watching including cedar waxwings,

yellow warblers, gray catbird, baltimore oriole, rose-breasted grosbeak,
song sparrows and goldfinches.
