We welcomed Walter Muma, President of Wildwood Canada to the Club and his talk on Ontario Wildflowers was very enjoyable. A great primer for spring, especially on such a rainy day! His focused most of his botany explorations on Ontario. His outdoors interests include tracking and wilderness survival, and just generally wandering and enjoying nature.
Walter took us on an exploration of the many wildflowers that grow throughout our landscapes. Some flowers included were Wild Ginseng, Bloodroot, Bellwort and Trout Lily. Shrubs and trees are wildflowers too – did you know that?
One plant of note – he shared about Water Hemlock, the most poisonous plant in Ontario. A challenge of this plant is that there are other plants that look similar, such as Water Parsnip and Wild Carrot.
