Two outings in May had the Orillia Naturalists’ Club members getting out and exploring places farther from home.
First, they ventured to Matchedash Bay, where they climbed the rock that was dropped by a glacier, and then carpooled to a property off of Quarry Road. They walked beside a marsh looking for birds, butterflies and more. There were Ring-necked Ducks, American Bittern and more.
Next, down to Mayer’s Marsh and the Minesing Wetland. Along with Rick Simpson from Nature Conservancy of Canada, our group of 19 counted an impressive 53 bird species in less than 3 hours. Species included:
- Snow Goose
- Trumpeter Swan
- Great Blue Heron
- Wood Duck
- Warbling Vireo
- Great Crested Flycatcher
- Barn Swallow
- Blue-gray Gnatcatcher
- Golden-winged Warbler
- Cape May Warbler
- Palm Warbler
- Scarlet Tanager
- Mourning Warbler
